Scout Spirit

But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Try to leave this world a little better than you found it and when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best. "Be prepared" in this way, to live happy and to die happy - stick to your Scout Promise always - even after you have ceased to be a boy - and God help you to do it.

I'm glad I put my son

in Boy Scout Kyoto 38

Comments collected from parents of 38's scouts,
on Dec.23rd, 2014

Our sons are adjusting very well to structure

  • It has broaden the scope of my son's interests recreational pursuits
  • My son made many friends including foreign scouts, by participating Boy Scout Jamboree.

It encourages the boys to embrace independent thinking and empowers them to carry it forward

  • How to tie a rope, how to build a fire, how to cook over an open fire, how to properly pack a backpack for hiking in the mountains, are generally skills that most of us as parents cannot teach.
  • Boys are required to speak in front of people, which will be good experiences when they become adult
  • Boys start doing their own things, such as taking public transportation by themselves

We discovered refreshingly new relational dynamics between my sons and ourselves

  • Since kids are given "top priority", they will be continuously discovering and overcoming new challenges.
  • The lines of communication are opened wide, as parents experience and enjoy outdoor living with their children.
  • There becomes good circle between mothers, by helping overnight camping etc.

Lifelong activities

  • My son quit scouting during high school, but there were rooms to be back
  • It has broaden the scope of my son's interests recreational pursuits
  • You can experience outdoor living in such areas as camping, outdoor cooking, and hiking in the snow
  • Experience the benefit of interacting with various age groups' skill sets that some children NEVER acquire.
  • Scouts have the unique opportunity of meeting and forming lifelong friendships, both nationally and internationally!

Became gentle, tender and kind

  • My son start taking care of his younger brother and sister
  • Behave well by learning Scout oath and law
  • Exposure to unique experiences like "fund raising" which encourages a "mindset" of generosity and good citizenship.

Mr. Shun Ohyabu
took international camp staff program in Detroit, Michigan in 1972

I have applied ICSP (*1) in 1972, which Boy Scout of America invites scout leaders from other countries. Fortunately I have passed the interview and could take a great chance to visit USA.
I have spent interesting time with boys from Detroit area council, such as teaching Japanese games and songs. I was the only Japanese among 1,200 boys throughout six weeks, and I was not fluent in English. However I have found myself being much positive than before.

This great experience influenced my life, resulted to have me hired by IBM, United States based company. And luckily I got an assignment working in Houston, Texas for two years with my family. This picture is I have invited local middle school students to IBM office in Houston. This program is so called "Project Business", letting children to experience what companies are doing. I am so grateful how United States influenced my life. And I wanted to contribute back to them when I became adult. This spirit is my basis of life, and I would like to continue supporting boy scout movements in Japan.

*1 ICSP : International Camp Staff Program. Part of international Boy Scout program between Japan and overseas countries. The program is funded by overseas countries to give international experiences for young leaders in Japan. Boy Scout Kyoto #38 have three leaders whom have taken this program in the past including myself.
